May is dedicated to raising awareness for celiac disease, and the advocacy group, Beyond Celiac, would like everyone to take 60 seconds to learn more about this invisible illness.
For people with celiac disease, gluten-free is not a fad diet. Celiac disease is a genetic autoimmune disease, where gluten is the trigger, and the health consequences of eating gluten are life threatening.
What are the symptoms?
An estimated three million people in the United States have celiac disease and more than 80% of them are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. There are more than 300 symptoms of celiac disease, and symptoms can be different from person to person. Here’s a list of symptoms.
What is the treatment?
Currently, the only treatment for celiac disease is a strict gluten-free diet, which is burdensome and costly to maintain. Even people who adhere to a strict gluten-free diet have continued to report.
Sitari Pharma, a COI portfolio company, is working on a therapeutic approach to inhibit the enzyme that is central to celiac disease.
